Bite the soft portion of the valve and suck at the same time - this will start the flow of water. The valve will remain sealed when not in use.

Some models are equipped with a lock that you can engage to prevent accidental spilling. Simply operate the shutoff by rotating the body of the valve 90 degrees (Blaster) or moving the plastic handle forward (Comet).
